In the DTF industry, most powders fall into a few major material categories based on their polymer composition.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Powder

Thermoplastic polyurethane, commonly abbreviated as TPU, is the most widely used material in DTF adhesive powders.

TPU powders are popular because they provide a balanced combination of flexibility, adhesion, and durability after transfer.

Typical characteristics of TPU-based powders include:

  • good elasticity after curing
  • stable bonding to textile fibers
  • resistance to cracking during stretching
  • consistent melting behavior during heat pressing

Because of these properties, TPU powders are widely used in standard DTF printing systems.

Polyamide Adhesive Powder

Polyamide powders are another type of thermoplastic adhesive used in some transfer printing processes.

Polyamide-based powders can offer strong bonding strength and relatively high heat resistance compared with some other thermoplastic materials.

These powders may appear in certain textile transfer applications where higher temperature resistance or specific fabric compatibility is required.

However, in most standard DTF printing workflows, polyamide powders are less commonly used than TPU powders.

Polyester-Based Adhesive Powder

Some adhesive powders are produced using polyester-based polymers.

These powders can provide stable melting behavior and may be used in certain transfer systems where specific bonding characteristics are desired.

Compared with TPU powders, polyester powders are generally less flexible after curing and therefore appear less frequently in typical DTF printing applications.

Why TPU Powder Is Most Common in DTF Printing

Within the DTF printing industry, TPU-based powders are widely considered the standard material for adhesive powder.
